Projects
Let Freedom Ring Project-The Presidential Oak Grove
In 2006-2007 our club created this oak grove honoring the 8 United States Presidents from Ohio. Each tree has a sign naming the president being honored, the years he was president, his number, plus the type of oak tree planted. The grove has a lighted American flag and Ohio flag, benches and plantings. We encourage the elementary schools in Westerville to visit this site which is located behind the Westerville Library.
Hanby House Heritage Garden
In 2005 our club planted perennials, annuals, and vegetables in this fenced-in garden at the historic Hanby House. The garden was to be a replica of what a garden would be in 1850 to 1900. Hanby House was an Underground Railroad site and has over 2400 visitors yearly.
Each year our club replaces, replants and adds plants to the garden. Many hours are spent watering, weeding and maintaining this outstanding garden. We start the clean-up and dig-up in April, the planting in May and the weeding and watering every week throughout the summer. Come October, we do a clean up and add manure.
This past year, a member of the Ohio Historical Society indicated that it was one of the best and well-maintained historical gardens he had seen all year. Our garden club should be proud.
The Hanby House was included in the 2011 WesterFlora Tour. About 500 people viewed this beautiful garden. They were supplied with 5 pages of diagrams showing all plantings in the 5 areas of the garden: Medicinal, Culinary, Vegetable, Dye/Fragrance and Perimeter Plantings. Four recipes showing the use of fresh herbs were handed out: Cream of Leek and Potato Soup, Fennel Orange Salad, T-Bone Steak with Garlic Parsley Sauce , and Green Beans with Fresh Dill.
